A Brief Introduction
Nanjing University of Finance and Economics (NUFE) is a public institution of higher education located in Jiangsu Province, P. R. China. The university is a multidisciplinary institution focusing on finance, economics, science, engineering, liberal arts and law, with financial and economic disciplines as its core.
NUFE is located in the historic and cultural city of Nanjing, which was the capital city of six ancient dynasties of China. Nevertheless Nanjing itself is also a modern and mildly cosmopolitan city. It has shops and facilities to suit western tastes with the availability of all manner of imported goods (except for baked beans), while still remaining every bit a Chinese metropolis.
Sports and Food facilities:
NUFE has 25,000 square metres of modern sports grounds which can hold large-scale sports events. These include tennis courts, badmington courts, volley ball courts, basketball courts, athletics tracks and of course football pitches. Each of NUFE's campuses has several canteens which cook Chinese food at extremely reasonable prices. Naturally all of these facilities are open to foreign teachers.
General Information:
The university consists of three schools and 10 departments: School of Economics & Statistics, School of Accounting, Hong Shan School, Finance Department, Department of Public Finance, Business Administration Department, Marketing & Advertising Department, Law Department, English Department, Food Science and Engineering Department, Computer Science and Technology Department,etc. offering 29 undergraduate majors.
NUFE has a student body of 14,500, of which 12,000 are undergraduates. In addition, there are 6,500 for adult education. NUFE boasts of well-qualified faculty totaling 1,300 with 710 teaching staff, among them 345 full professors and associate professors.
Teaching Information:
Class sizes range from 50-80 students, which although daunting at first is in fact quite engaging. Student ability ranges from beginner to intermediate level with all students required to pass an College English Teaching level 4 be allowed to enroll at the university. English Majors are of a much higher standard with advanced reading and writing skills and intermediate to advanced conversational skills.
VISAS and Payment information:
Foreign teachers at NUFE are attached to the Foreign Affairs Department who then liase with the corresponding English, German and Economics departments to organise time tabling and other administrative functions such as organisation of all Visas and monthly salary. There are three full time bilingual administrators lead by Professor Weifen Qiu. Professor Weifen Qiu has taken part in many cultural and educational exchanges with Manchester University in the United Kingdom and Manitoba University in Canada as well as lecturing English Majors on "An Outline Introduction to Britain and America".
Communications:
NUFE has 59 laboratories for various departments with 10 computer laboratories each containing 1,300 computers, multimedia classrooms, language laboratories and electrical audio-visual teaching centres. Internet service is provided through the computer center via CERNET. The university has the most modern telecommunications setup with each teacher being provided their own telephone making phoning home as very easy and straight forward. Telephones use a pre-pay card system (so you can not use more then you can afford - no shocking phone bill at the end of the month ;-). Mobile telephones are not provided by the university, but are encouraged and are very economically priced. They also work on a pre-pay card system allowing international calling and receiving. Naturally email is the most cost effective solution.
