Nanjing University of Finance and Economics, founded in July 1981, at the beginning of "reform and opening-up" is a stateowned, multi-subject, full-time regular courses financial university. The University's main subjects are Economics and Management as well as Law, Humanities, Science and Engineering. After more then 20 years of reform and construction combined with the hard work of all its staff, Nanjing University of Finance and Economics has developed an excellent reputation throughout China. Our University's social influence continues to grow and as development increases at blistering speeds, the quality of education provided together with the school's efficiency allows for constant improvement. Nanjing University of Finance and Economics has become the biggest financial university in China providing comprehensive courses in economics and management. In the year 2000 our university was listed as one of the three key universities to be developed during the "10th five-year plan" by the government. This has provided sufficient funding for growth and development on a scale rarely seen by western countries.

The University also has several 2-year and 3-year speciality college courses such as: Tax, Accounting and Cuisine. Students all over the country are enrolling on these speciality courses. Currently the University has approximately 14,000 enrolled full time students, 13,000 of which are undergradutes. Furthermore great attention has been paid to adult education. Nanjing University of Finance and Economics is also developing courses focusing on social services. Our University also provides 6 Jiangsu Higher Education Self-taught Examinations facilities. Nanjing University of Finance and Economics has been ranked third amoung the universities in Jiangsu for the number of students who enter and pass these examinations.
Nanjing University of Finance and Economics is working hard to develop higher education in Jiangsu province. It is doing this by pushing forward reforms in "The Official System of Running Schools" formally a rigid standard for state-owned schools. Furthermore it is a pioneer exploring a new official model of running State-owned schools to fit the Socialist Market Economic System. This is more then mere rhetoric. In 1999, Nanjing University of Finance and Economics created an experimental school (Hong Shan School). Hong Shan School is now a subsiduary school under the management of Nanjing University of Finance and Economics. Although the school is state-owned it is run and managed by the local people. The schools focus is on educating undergraduate students in Economics, Management and Law.
The university possesses a rich and diverse teaching environment, including multimedia laboratories, computer rooms with high speed internet connectivity and scientific research laboratories as well as classrooms equiped with up to date projectors and computer terminals. There are more than 800 highly qualified full-time teachers. These include professors and the associate professors of which total 400. A further ninety are at PhD level with the rest being made up of young teachers 70% of which hold a Masters level degree. Two teachers have won the title of "State-Grade Experts" due to their outstanding contributions. Ten others enjoy a government special allowance and more then 40 people have gained various titles from Provincial Level Expert, Provincial Level Trans-century Discipline Leaders and Outstanding Discipline Leaders. Finall an excellent young set of backbone teachers. These teachers form a very cohesive team and are managed in hierarchical structures consisting of subject, professional title, age and formal schooling record. All teaching staff are constantly being assisted in their own personal intellectual development through training and sponsorship.
In between teaching classes, the teachers work hard to develop scientific research and form the Industrial Economic Science Group featured on Industrial Circulation, Industrial Policies and Food Economics Quantitative Economic Science Group based on statistics and Econometrics, Accounting Science Group United Accounting, Financial Management and Audit, Business Administration Science Group supported by Enterprise Strategic Management, Human Resources Management and Marketing Management, Financial Science Group specialising in financial projects and insurance calculation and Theoretical Economic science group emphasized on the research of On Capital, continued consumption and population economic research, Economic Globalisation and the internationalisation of the Chinese Economy. The University has made great achievements in scientific research. In recent years, the faculty members undertook twenty state level scientific research programs and 178 provincial and ministerial level State Education Commission programs. They have published 2612 research papers, gained 45 items of the outstanding scientific research achievements above provincial level and more then 3million RMB in research funding and successfully held the National and International high level acedemic workshop many times. In 2001, the university gained two scientific research programs supported by the Social Science fund, one item of the National Scientific Tackle-Key-Problems program, more then forty items above the provinicial and ministerial level; six items of outstanding scientific research achievement on philosophy and social science and ten more items of award at the provincial level. It established the only key provincial lab, the E-commerce Lab in the E-commerce field of Jiangsu Province, and a key provincial lab of "Food and Oil Stuff Quality Control and Further Processing Technology". The University also has acedemic research departments: Jiangsu Industrial Development Institute, which is co-established by the Jiangsu Provincial Education Ministry and Jiangsu Provincial Education Commission, WTO research centre, International Economic Law Institute, Enterprises Development Strategic Institute, Food Economics Institute and Higher Education Institute. Journal of Nanjing University of Finance and Economics, published and issued at home and abroad, is at its core a national, humanities and social sciences magasine. Industrial Economics Research, published and issued at home and abroad, is the only academic publication in the field of Industrial Economics in China.
The University pays great to attention to social services and has set up several social service institutions such as: The School for Managers, Chinese Foodstuff Circulation Training Centre, Commercial Design Agency, Food and Oil Stuff Inspection Centre etc and actively develops social services, trying to open up and widen social service fields. In recent years the scholars in Nanjing University of Finance and Economics participated in the drafts of several "Five Year Plans". Furthermore they undertook a large amount of consultation projects in the service of various enterprises and institutions in and outside Jiangsu province and trained more then 6400 cadres. The system of uniting, producing, studying and research of engineering specialties has been quickly developed and over 30 items of research achievement have been transfered to the related enterprises and have been obtained better economic and social benefit.
